We are currently seeking resumes from qualified candidates to join our Cultural Center team. The THPO Director will administer the Tribal Historic Preservation Program whose mission is to promote, protect, preserve and manage all matters relating to Chemehuevi Tribal cultural resources. This position will be responsible for coordinating cultural restoration and preservation with special emphasis on Native American Graves Protection & Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), development of the cultural center, regulatory policies, National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Sec. 106, and archival preservation. This position will consult with Federal and State agencies regarding the Tribe's historic preservation and cultural resources.
Act as liaison between the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe and other agencies dealing with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA),
and Archaeological Resource Protection Act (ARPA)
Create an annual work plan following the National Park Service's standards for a Tribal Historic Preservation Office.
Work closely with Tribal Administrator for the application of and utilization of grants offered for Tribal Historic Preservation Offices, projects, etc.
Develop and maintain a Cultural Resource Information System (CRIS) for the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe and its relevant cultural resources.
Develop and offer education to the Reservation community on information regarding historic preservation.
Develop, train and maintain Tribal citizens as Cultural Monitors.
Work closely with Chemehuevi Tribal citizens and professional researchers.
Research historical materials and artifacts.
Work closely with Tribal elders to record and document oral Chemehuevi history.
Seek Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO) certification for the Tribe.
Develop and offer classes, workshops, seminars, etc., for public education about historic preservation.
Other duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications:

Knowledge of Southern Paiute history, language and culture preferred
Experience in grant writing, administration and or management; budget preparation and community relations.
Knowledge of archeological and ethnographic procedures.
Knowledge of the preservation of museum artifacts, documents, and use of audio-visual equipment.
Knowledge of traditional, historical and cultural areas of Chemehuevi concern.
Knowledge of security systems of physical facilities.
Bachelor's degree in archaeology and/or experience in related fields.
Experience working in the field with cultural resources and/or cultural sites.
Knowledge of the National Historic Preservation Act [Section 106] preferred.
Other Requirements:

Adhere to Drug-Free Workplace Policy, pre-employment drug testing required.
Valid Driver's License and good driving record.
Ability to travel when required.
Ability to work flexible schedule, evenings and some weekends.
Working Conditions and Environment:

Will need the ability to establish rapport quickly with others working on the same project and be able to promote a positive team environment. Working knowledge of dealing with a diverse population while using tact, diplomacy, and respect.

• Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
• Requires repetitive movement of the fingers, wrists and hands.
• Ability to lift objects from a lower to higher position and/or horizontally.
• Occasionally involves field work in inclement weather
